Printing ink producers expect supply chain strains to continue into 2022. Even as some of these constraints ease and the recovery moves forward, there remains global uncertainty regarding a resurgence of the coronavirus, erratic consumer purchasing behaviors, and potential trade barriers.

Across our industry, a number of compounding issues are leading to significant pressure on printing ink manufacturers across Europe. The increased cost of pigment raw materials, tightening upstream petrochemical supply chains, cost increases for vegetable oil derivatives and dramatically increased freight costs – due to the reduced availability of containers – are highlights of a myriad of destabilising factors.

EuPIA (the European Printing Ink Association) has updated its Suitability List of Photoinitiators and Photosynergists for Food Contact Materials which identifies the suitability of photoinitiators and photosynergists for use in printed food contact materials, such as coatings, inks and varnishes for the non-contact side of food packaging. The list acts as part of EuPIA’s industry product stewardship programme for brand owners and printers and provides a guideline of recommended raw materials that are deemed suitable for printing on sensitive product packaging, including food-safe products.
